Frostgrave Combatants Pt3 – Warhounds

In addition to the Frostgrave soldiers I also had some dogs suitable for use as warhounds lurking in my lead pile.

These are made by Warlord Games as part of their 28mm Ancient Britons range. I originally bought these for use with a fantasy Barbarian force but I think they’re too small compared to the Grenadier/Mirliton Barbarians I wanted to pair them with.

They seem okay scale wise against the Fireforge and GW figures although I still think they’re a little on the small side for Molossers. I painted them up roughly based on Bull Mastiff colours with fawn coats and black masks.

I had to put them on 30mm round bases as they’re too small to be mounted individually on either 40mm round or GW rectangle cavalry bases but too big to fit on 25mm bases.

As with the other recent posts I’ve based them for use with Frostgrave.

    These look the business. I’ve got some old Ral Partha wolves which I will probably strip and use as warhounds. I’m interested in their high Move: could be useful for getting to and delaying one’s opponent whilst you swing and nab all the loot!

      Thanks. I’ve been looking through the Ral Partha range to cover some of the random encounter table creatures in the rulebook. I’ve not played the game yet so I’m itching to try it out!

    They’ve come up a treat! Very nice and natural looking. I’ve also now made a mental note to use 30mm bases when I eventually paint my own warhounds 🙂

    If you don’t mind a constructive suggestion, have you thought of adding some uneven wash or a weathering powder wash (powder + matt varnish + some medium/water) to some parts of the bases – just to make the bases look a little less uniform and more natural.

      Thanks! You’re not wrong about the bases looking a bit bland and uniform. The 30mm bases make it even more noticeable being a little larger. I’ve basically gone for a ‘battleship grey approach’ for now as I’m planning a 4′ x 4′ modular gaming board just for use with Frostgrave. At the moment though I’m unsure just what the exact colour scheme for this board will be so I’m hanging back on putting too much effort into the bases at the moment. I plan to add more to/repaint them to match when I work out how things work out.
      When I painted up some of the wizards recently I based them with a snow effect. With hindsight I’ve regretted this as they’re going to look a little odd when inside buildings etc. As a result I’ve stopped short of any more base details until I work out the gaming board colours.

      I’ll be basing things properly when the gaming board comes together but for now please excuse the majority of the Frostgrave posts I’ll be making because they’ll all be based in this way. I promise I’ll drop this grey version of the old goblin green early 90s bases as soon as I can! 🙂

        All good, mate. They do look decent as-is, just not up to the level of the figures standing on top of them and a bit of colour gradation through them would make them look much more natural. I’m looking forward to seeing the full board now! GF9 makes (made?) some good circular ruined building sections that would probably work well with Frostgrave.

    Your ability to bring miniatures to life is extraordinary. I make the odd Aircraft, tank and ship, but none of them are anywhere near the quality and realism that your wargames miniatures represent. I really take my hat off to you. Rich.

      Thank you Rich, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed some of the miniatures I’ve painted and it’s very nice of you to say so.

      I’ve never painted much in the way of modern miniatures and wouldn’t know where to start with ships, tanks or aircraft!
